This entry is part 4 of 4 in the Workshop: Bittersweet Opening Scenes
This was actually my original plan for Chapter 1 but I didn’t finish it and the final scene still only has dialogue.
Chapter One
Get up, get out, get away from these liars
‘Cause they don’t get your soul or your fire
Take my hand, knot your fingers through mine
And we’ll walk from this dark room for the last time

Elm Street
Spring had arrived early in upstate New York that yearâthe cherry blossom trees lining Elm Street were already in bloom as the sound of a motorcycle broke through the stillness of the early afternoon.
The bike rolled to a stop in front of a three-story brownstone as Jason Morgan switched off the ignition and studied the building for a long moment.
He hadnât planned to come back to this town. Not after the events of the last few years. After losing Robin and Michael, after the Sonny and Carly debacle, after that day in the parkâŚ
He hadnât had a choice. Not when Sonnyâs phone call reached him in India. It had taken nearly a week, but Jason had called in all the favors he could muster in order to come home as soon as possible.
Jason parked the bike and started up the stairs, dreading this visit. Dreading the thought that maybe in the twenty-four hours since heâd spoken to Sonny, something had happened.
He knocked on the door. A moment later, he saw a rustling at the curtains. It was another few minutes before the door was finally opened.
Jason blinked and took a slight step back, swallowing. âHey. IâI wasnât expecting to see you here.â
Looking just as stunned as he felt, Elizabeth Webber nodded slowly. âJason. IâmâIâm staying with Michael while Bobbie is laying down.â
She stepped back, opening the door wider. He considered making an excuse and coming back later, but he wasnât someone who walked away from a difficult situation.
He justâhe didnât know what to say to her.
It had been a yearâalmost to the dayâsince their last meeting. Since heâd put himself on the line and asked her to leave Port Charles with him.
Since sheâd said no.
She looked differentâher hear was longer, her eyes were tired. She was thinner, though sheâd never carried much weight on her small frame.
But she was still Elizabeth, and he hadnât quite prepared himself for this conversation. Maybe heâd thought he could avoid it.
Though that now seemed like a strange fantasy of the sort he didnât normally allow himself.
Conscious of the fact heâd allowed the moment to lapse into a tense silence, he cleared his throat. âI wanted to see how she wasâŚâ But he trailed off, because it seemed like a stupid thing to say.
âYeahâŚâ Elizabeth closed the door, brushing his shoulder as she did so. He stayed still, but her cheeks were flushed when she lifted her eyes to his, as if even the merest physical interaction reminded her of the previous spring.
Of all the things that had happened between them, and maybe some that hadnât.
âShe hasnât had much sleep sinceâŚâ she lifted her shoulder. âDr. Collins prescribed some sleeping pills, but she wouldnât take them until today.â
He nodded. âWhereâsâWhat about Michael?â
She gestured into the open living room, and Jason saw hisâhis nephew, he told himself, just his nephew. He saw the little boy with shaggy blonde hair curled up on the sofa, his eyes closed with a crayon still loosely clutched in his hand.
âHeâs coping,â Elizabeth replied She folded her arms, her gaze troubled. âHe keeps asking for Carly, but Bobbie hasnât wanted to tell himââ
And now Jason had to ask the question. âI havenâtâI havenât talked to anyone since yesterday. Has there been anyââ
Elizabethâs lips pressed together, but her eyes changed. Sadness crept in. âOh.â She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
He didnât want to hear her answer.
âThey called off the search this morning,â she said softly, opening her eyes and meeting his gaze. âThe Coast Guard is finishing out the day, but theyâtoday is the last day.â
His chest tightened, and he took an involuntary step back towards the door. If they were calling off the search, that meantâ
âItâs only been a week,â he protested, but it sounded inane even to his ears. A week was long enough. Longer than many searches last.
Elizabeth nodded, tucking her hair behind her ears. âSonny offered to keep funding a private search, but the Coast Guard told him itâs not about the money. The area where Carly had the accidentââ She paused a moment, swallowing. âItâs the same place as Brendaâs accident.â
And Jason remembered what theyâd said about that search. âThe current dragged her car out before Jax could call in the report. And the lakeâitâs too big to searchâtoo deepââ
Carlyâs car had gone over the cliff. Had she died before the car hit the water? Had she drownedâHe shook his head. Heâd never know, so there was no point in thinking about it.
âThatâs the theory, yeah.â She folded her arms, shifting her weight and looking uncomfortable. âIâm sorry, Jason.â
He nodded, then looked around. He had his answers now. There was no point in lingering. But how often should he expect to see her here?
He didnât want to see her, to think about her. To think about who she went home to. He could put her out of his head during the last year, but not now. Not in Port Charles. It would be an impossible task.
âI forgot you and Bobbie were close,â Jason said after a long moment. âI guess since the weddingââ
âI live upstairs,â she said at the same time, but then stopped. Elizabeth tilted her head, frowning. âWhat wedding?â
Was she going to force him to say it? âYours. You-you were supposed to get married. At New Yearâs.â
The last time heâd asked Sonny about her, that had been the plan. Sonny would have said something if it had changed.
âOh.â Elizabethâs cheeks flushed. âNo. I didnâtâGia and Iâwe live upstairs.â
Jason hesitated, because he didnât know what to do with that information. How to process it. âI hadnât heard.â
âItâs a long story,â she said, with a careless shrug of her shoulder. âIâve been helping out with Michael as much as I can. Itâs the least I can do since Sonny and Bobbie have always been so good to me. AndâŚâ The flush in her cheeks deepened as she looked away. âWellâŚyou know.â
That her devotion to Michael stemmed from the way Jason felt about the little boy didnât surprise him. Elizabeth had always been loyal.
And he wanted to change the subject. He didnâtâshe wasnât married, but that didnât mean anything. âTheyâre sure Carlyâs accident wasâthat it was an accident?â
âThe PCPD thinks so,â Elizabeth said, looking relieved to be off the topic of her personal life. âScott is pushing them to keep investigating. To be sure.â
Jason huffed at that. âIâll bet.â
âOhâŚâ she shook her head. âNo, itâs not about Sonny. I mean, yeah, Sonny said they asked about that, but Sonny and Carly have really gone their separate ways. I mean, I canât even remember the last time they were even in the same room.â
Jason frowned. He didnât understandâthat wasnât the way Sonny had described their post-divorce relationship. And⌠âWhat about Michael? Sonny adopted him. Didnât he?â
âNo, Carly decided not to go through with it.â She looked at the sleeping child. âHe still has your name.â
âMyââ Jason swallowed hard. That didnât make sense. âWhy?â
âBecause Carly always believed sheâd leave AJ to come back to you.â Elizabeth shrugged. âShe kept putting off the name change and then Sonny never adopted him, so heâs still Michael Morgan.â
And now that he thought about itâthat explanation made sense. Carly had schemed to come back to him almost until the day she married Sonny, and her marriage to AJ had been brief.
She continued, âJason, I donât know if you know anything about Carlyâs willââ
âI didnât know she had one.â
âOh.â Elizabeth looked away. âSonny made her get one after the divorce. In case of the Quartermainesââ
And now that he thought about it, if Sonny hadnât adopted Michael, he was surprised AJ and the Quartermaines hadnât swooped in and taken him away already. Which meantâ
âShe left me guardianship, didnât she?â Jason asked. The foyer felt smaller, as if the walls were closing in. He wouldnât be able to make this a quick trip. He was stuck in Port Charles. At least until custody was settled.
And if the Quartermaines had their way, it wouldnât be until shortly after the birth of Michaelâs first child.
âThis isnât how it was supposed to be,â he said, more to himself than anyone else. Heâd given Sonny and Carly all the information they needed to keep Michael with them. He was supposed to be free. Finally.
Elizabeth looked miserable, her fingers twisting in front of her. âI justâI just thought you should have some warning. I didnât know what you knewââ
Nothing. Clearly.
âEdward came to tell Bobbie how sorry he was, but he wanted to talk to Michael, too.â
Jason focused on her at that statement. âWhat did he say to him?â
âI wouldnât let him,â Elizabeth said. âI donât have anything against Edward personally. Heâs always been nice to me, but I justâI know he and AJ are planning to do something at some point. I was afraid Edward would upset Michael.â
âHow do you know what theyâre planning?â And why was Elizabeth privy to so much about Sonny and Carly? About the Quartermaines? She hadnât been close to any of these people when he left.
What the hell had happened in the last year?
âAJâs married to Courtneyâthe sister Sonny found out about last year? Mikeâs daughter? He married her about two months ago.â
âSonny mentioned that.â And only that, apparently. âDo you know her well?â
âWe work together at Kellyâs,â Elizabeth replied âWeâre pretty close. Gia and I tried to talk her out of marrying AJâI mean, we were all worried he was doing it to get back at Sonnyââ She broke off abruptly. âIâm sorry, you donât care about any of that.â
âNo, itâsââ He hesitated. He wasnât used to being out of the loop. He didnât like having to ask her about Sonnyâs sister and her marriage to AJ. That Elizabeth knew more about Michaelâs situation and Sonnyâs family than Jason didâ
âI should check in with Sonny,â Jason said instead. âCould you ask Bobbie to get in touch with me when she wakes up?â
Elizabeth bit her lip and dipped her head. When she raised her eyes to meet his, he could no longer read them. âYeah. Iâll make sure Lucas gives her the message.â He must have made a face because she continued with a hint of impatience. âHeâs taking over for me in half hour. I have to get to work.â
âOh.â Jason reached into his pocket for the slip of paper heâd prepared for this moment. He just hadnât expected to give it to Elizabeth. âIf thereâs anything Michael or Bobbie needsâŚâ He held it out. âMy cell number.â
Without looking down, Elizabeth folded the paper in half and slid it into her jeans pocket. âIâll give it to her.â
And because he thought maybe heâd been a little abruptâhe cleared his throat. âOr if you need anything.â
She nodded, but the awkward tension had returned. Or maybe heâd ignored it. âLet me know if thereâs anything I can do for you and Sonny.â
He nodded, glanced in at Michael, then made his escape.
It seemed like he wasnât going to be able to avoid Elizabeth while he was home, but hopefully they could keep it civil. Friendly.
And distant. As soon as he could transfer to custody to Bobbie and ensure Michael was safe from the Quartermaines, he was leaving Port Charles.
Corinthos Penthouse: Living Room
Sonny Corinthos glanced up as Max Giambetti pushed open the door. âBoss, Jasonâs here.â
He set the bourbon back on the minibar and raised his tumbler to his lips, watching as his friend and partner passed the guard to enter the penthouse.
âGood to see you, Max,â Jason said. When the door was closed, the friendly expression had dissipated and Jason turned hard eyes back to Sonny.
Interesting. âI thought you were getting in tomorrow,â Sonny said after a moment. And he hadnât told anyone Jason was coming back, so he was going to be in trouble on any number of fronts. âI guess you stopped in to see Bobbie first by the way youâre looking at me.â
âYou didnât tell me Elizabeth was living at the Brownstone,â Jason said, his tone clipped. âOr that you hadnât adopted Michael.â
Ah. Well that explained some of the annoyance. âYou check once, maybe twice a month,â Sonny said, ambling over to the sofa and taking a seat, stretching an arm out across the back. âFor five minutes. Itâs not really a lot of time to tell you whatâs going on around here.â
Jason narrowed his eyes. âTwo sentences. I wouldnât have gone there without contacting Bobbie firstââ
Sonny sipped his bourbon and considered the situation. âI suppose you know Elizabeth didnât marry Lucky.â
âThat isnât important.â But the younger manâs eyes cast away. âIâm concerned with Michael. Elizabeth said something about Edward and Carlyâs will.â
Theyâd come back to Elizabethâs relationship status shortly, Sonny was sure, but allowed Jason to direct the conversation. âI feel sorry for her,â he said. âSheâs really stuck in the middle with all of this, but I suppose sheâs used to that.â
Jason scowled, but sat in the armchair. âWhat does that mean?â
âWell, she and I are friends, thatâs probably clear to you. I figured youâd want me to look out for her, and after everything that happened last summer, then the fiasco with her weddingâwell, Iâm fond of her, Jason.â Sonny shrugged. âAnd living at the Brownstone, she and Carly finally managed to call a truce. Sheâs like family to Bobbie, Michael adores her. And sheâs thick as thieves with my brand-new sister.â
âShe said something like that.â But Jason waited a beat. âWhat wedding fiasco?â
Some things were so predictable. âOh, well, to make a long story short â Luckyâs brainwashing wasnât quite finished. I mentioned that she was faking her death to draw out Helena?â
A muscle ticked in Jasonâs cheek. âYou did. And told me she and Lucky were getting married when it was over.â
âThat was the plan. She did her part. I put her up on the island for a few weeks to keep her out of sight. Luke and Laura finished off Helena, broke the brainwashingâagain, or so Iâm told though heâs still an annoying little shit.â Sonny shrugged. âShe came home, started planning the wedding. Looked miserable, but you know her. Once she makes up her mind, she goes for it. Then right before the ceremony, Gia Campbell found out Helena left behind a little gift.â
When Jason didnât say anything, Sonny continued. âAccording to Lucky, he didnât love her anymore. Helena erased it.â
âWhat?â Jason shook his head. âThatâs not even possibleââ
âWell, of course Lucky didnât tell herâhe thought theyâd just fall in love again like they had before. She dumped a glass of champagne on his head and walked out.â He grinned. âI enjoyed that.â
âWhy didnât you tell me any of this?â Jason asked. âIt was months agoââ
âI didnât tell you about the changes in her life because, at first,â Sonny said, âI wasnât sure theyâd stick. You know how crazy she was about Lucky. How she twisted herself to help him, stick by him. I couldnât be sure, and there was no point in telling you unless it was for real.â
âBut theyâve stuck.â
âThey have,â Sonny confirmed. âGia walked out on Nikolas at the same time, and they moved in with Bobbie. Theyâre both attending PCU now.â He shifted. âI was going to tell you. The next time you called in.â
âThereâs a lot you didnât tell me.â Jason leaned forward. âYou didnât adopt Michael.â
âNo, I didnât.â Sonny sipped his drink. âAnd she left guardianship to you. Itâs the way it should be.â
âIt wasnât supposed to be that wayââ
âCarly wanted to break away from me,â Sonny interrupted. âKeeping her son part of my life kept me in her life. She wanted a fresh start.â
Jason didnât look convinced, but nodded. He pushed himself to his feet. âItâs justâŚwith Carlyââ He swallowed hard. âWith Carly gone, the Quartermainesâtheyâve already hinted to Elizabeth theyâre going to try something.â
And they would. Sonny rose to his feet. âWell, Elizabeth will be your best bet to keep on top of that. Her friendship with Courtney, and all.â
âYeah, she mentioned that.â Jason rubbed the back of her neck. âI justâif sheâs trying to work things out with Lucky, me being around her is just going to complicateââ
âYouâre not usually this thick,â Sonny muttered. âLook, if you want to avoid contact with Elizabeth because your feelings arenât the same or whatever, thatâs fine. But donât lie to yourself. For the record, sheâs more likely to throw him out a window at this point. She walked out on him and built herself a new life.â
âThatâsââ Jason hesitated. âTheyâre not together.â
âIf you need it to be spelled out, then no, theyâre not and I canât see her going back to him.â Sonny fought the urge to roll his eyes. âLook, I donât know what happened the last time you were home. Elizabeth never said, and God knows, getting information out of you is like prying a vault open with a crow bar. But whatever it was, it doesnât change the fact that you arenât going to be able to avoid her. Sheâs living with Bobbie, working at Kellyâs, and sheâs a direct conduit to the Quartermaines.â
Jason nodded, but he didnât look convinced. âI justâI wish youâd said something.â
âI know.â And Sonny had really been planning to drop it in conversation casually the very next time he talked to Jason. âI just didnât expect CarlyâŚâ
âElizabeth said it was the same area where Brenda had her accident.â
His chest tight, Sonny managed to nod. âYeah. It was. I canât really wrap my mind around it. Sheâs gone. I kind of figured if one of us would goâitâd be me. Carly isââ He sighed. âCarly was a survivor.â
âIâm sorry, Sonny.â
âIâm sorry for both of us. For Michael and Bobbie. For the life Carly was creating. She was going places, Jason. Iâm just sorry sheâs not going to get there.â
Kellyâs: Dining Room
âHold on, hold on.â Gia Campbell held up a hand and shook her head. âAre you serious? He just showed up at the door?â
Elizabeth filled Giaâs coffee cup, keeping an eye on a table near the door where Courtney Quartermaine was rolling her eyes at Lucky Spencer and her sister, Sarah. If Sarah asked for one more substitution in her salad, Elizabeth was pretty sure Courtney was going to cut her.
âWebber.â
Elizabeth switched her focus back to her roommate and friend, wrinkling her nose. âI guess I kind of figured heâd be coming home. I justââ She shrugged and set the pot back on the burner. âI thought Sonny would give me some warning.â
âYou didnât ask him about Jason coming back?â Gia asked, closing her biology back and ending the charade of studying for finals.
âWe donâtââ Elizabeth sipped her own coffee. âWe donât really talk about Jason.â
Gia groaned. âSeriously. You know Sexy McHot is probably going come riding home on his motorcycle and youâre, allâŚâ She fluttered her eyelashes and clasped her hands under her chin. âWe donât really talk about Jason.â
âI hate you,â Elizabeth muttered as Courtney tossed the order at Don and joined them at the counter.
âAre we still talking about this?â Courtney asked. âI mean, itâs not like you guys dated.â
âIf not for Tweedle-Dee back there,â Gia said, jerking a thumb over her shoulder, âshe would have jumped those seriously fine bones.â
Elizabeth narrowed her eyes. âIf I recall correctly, you tried to.â
Gia grinned. âAbsolutely. Hey!â When Courtney scowled at her. âI was still technically single then.â
âAnd a bitch.â
âHey.â Gia jabbed a finger at her. âBygones, remember? Without me, youâre Mrs. Tweedle-Deeââ
âWhich would have made you Mrs. Tweedle-Dumb,â Courtney reminded Gia with a sweet smile. âSo you guys should just be grateful to one another.â
âHa,â Elizabeth said with a grin. âThatâs right.â
âAnyway,â Gia drawled. âThatâs not the point, now is it, Miss Thing? I am not the reason you did not do the down and dirty with the sexy boy.â
âJust how pretty is this guy?â Courtney wanted to know. âI saw some pictures at the Quartermaines before they kicked us out, but he was young. Cute, but nothing to write home about.â
âWell, if you hang around Liz long enough,â Gia said with a wicked glint in her eyes, âyou wonât be able to escape him. Theyâre like magnets. Like, they just wander towards one another.â
Elizabeth scowled at her. âGiaââ
âYes, dear?â
Before she could set Gia straight on the complete absence of any relationship with Jason, Courtney grimaced. Sarah was waving at them from her table.
âUgh, Iâll be right back,â the blonde said with a shake of her head.
Gia leaned forward. âHow was it really?â she asked, her tone softening. âWas it as awkward as you thought it would be?â
Elizabeth sighed, her ire disappearing. âWell, the last time I saw him, he asked me to run away with him, so yeah, it wasnât great.â She wiped the counter, keeping her eyes cast away from Gia. âHe didnât know Iâd be there.â
âWhich means he probably didnât know you were single.â Gia hesitated. âDid he?â
âSonny never told him, so I had to.â Elizabeth wiggled her shoulders, trying to shake away the tense memory. âIt was like talking to a wall. He didnât careâhe wanted to be away from me, so he grabbed the first excuse and left.â
âWell, youâll tell him what happened, heâll take about five seconds before he turns those baby blues on you, and youâll be jumping him by May.â Gia shrugged. âYouâre making it more complicated than it has to be.â
âWhat if Sonny tells him first?â
âSo what if he does?â
âSonnyâs going to make it sound like I only called off the wedding because of the brainwashing.â
âSo youâll get the chance to tell him it was also because you didnât love the little miscreant any more and this was the perfect chance to make your escape.â She twisted in her chair.
âThanks, Gia,â she replied dryly. âAlways a pleasure.â She sighed. âI kind of hope Sonny does tell him.â
âWell, thatâs a copout.â
Courtney returned, placing the water pitcher back in the mini fridge behind the counter. âWhatâs a copout?â
âHoping Sonny will do her dirty work,â Gia answered.
Elizabeth shot her friend a dirty look. âI justâJason and I spent most of his last visit home dealing with that. I donât want to do it again.â
âAre you going to go after him this time?â Courtney asked.
âI doubt it,â Elizabeth murmured, reaching for a rag to wipe the counter for the one thousandth time.
âOh, my God, donât make me hurt you.â Gia stabbed a finger at her. âGet out of your own way, bitch.â
âHey.â Elizabeth slapped the rag on the counter. âItâs been a year. Howââ She swallowed. âHow do I know heâs single? Maybe thereâs another woman.â
âOh.â Courtney pursed her lips. âWell, yeah, thatâd be an issue.â
âNot a problem,â Gia said. âI can get rid of her.â
âOh.â Elizabeth rolled her eyes. âWell, in that caseââ She frowned when she saw her sister standing and walking towards the counter. âExcuse me while I take the trash out and head to Mexico.â
She ducked out the door just as Sarah reached the counter, the blonde woman scowling. âWhere did my sister go?â Sarah demanded.
âTo a land far far away from you,â Gia snarled.
Sarah sneered at her sisterâs roommate. âI donât like you.â
âWell, now I may cry myself asleep at nightââ
Before anything could be thrown, Courtney jumped in. âSarah, can I get you anything?â
âYou know,â Sarah said, âI wish my sister would just find her path in life. Sheâs still workingâŚâ She cast her eyes around the diner. âHereâŚliving off Bobbieâs good gracesââ
âHey, we pay rent, you twitââ
âSheâs going nowhereââ
âHow about I send you somewhere?â
Jason pushed open the door to Kellyâs, and scowled when he saw Lucky Spencer sitting at a table. The blonde returned his look with a sneer but didnât stand up.
Jason ignored him and focused on the trio behind the counterâGia Campbell and two blondes he didnât recognize though the one next to Gia looked less strange. He approached them.
Gia saw him first and grinned. âJason Morgan!â
He didnât want to do this. He just wanted to find Elizabeth, clear the air, get some answers, then go to Jakeâs to get a room. He hated dealing with people he didnât know or, quite frankly, didnât like.
âGia.â He looked at the other blondes.
âCourtney,â the blonde in the apron offered. âI think weâre technically in-laws. Or something. Thatâs Sarah.â She paused. âElizabethâs sister.â
Sarah frowned at him, and now he remembered why she was vaguely familiar. Sheâd been present the night Nikolas had been shot at Lukeâs.
And Elizabeth had told him enough about her sister not to be interested.
âJason Morgan?â Sarah was saying when he tuned back into the conversation. âSince when do you know Lizzie? This is what Iâm talking about. How many bad choices is she going to makeââ
âIf you donât knock it off,â Gia snarled, âyouâre going to be wearing this coffeeââ
Jason ignored them both and looked to Courtney, who looked even more annoyed. In a low voice, she said, âElizabeth went out back on her break.â
âThanks,â Jason said and went out the back, casting a glance over his shoulder hoping neither Lucky nor Sarah would follow him.
Kelly’s: Alley
Elizabeth tosses a large black bag in the trash can, then lights a cigarette. She takes a long drag.
JASON
I thought you quit.
She turns at him, but doesnât toss it.
ELIZABETH
Oh. I did. Just–when I see my sister. (beat) I wasnât expecting to see you today. Again, I mean.
JASON
I went to Sonnyâs.
ELIZABETH
Yeah? Is he okay? I was gonna check in on him before my shift, but Lucas was running late.
JASON
Heâs okay. He told me about–about the wedding.
ELIZABETH
(rolls eyes)
Figures. Probably made it sound like Iâm a poor little waif whose fiance fell out of love with her.
JASON
Well, I donât know about the waif part, but yeah. He told me Helena brainwashed Lucky or something.
ELIZABETH
Or something. Thatâs his story. It doesnât even matter. By the time Gia told me what was going on, I was halfway out the window.
JASON
You–I thought you wanted to marry Lucky.
ELIZABETH
Well, you can want something right up until you get it. I looked at myself in that ugly wedding dress Laura insisted I buy and I wanted to jab a fork in my eye. We werenât getting married in the church I wanted, but at the Spencers. Laura and Lucky planned it all. I had no say–
(shakes her head)
Itâs not important. I was a different person.
JASON
Four months ago?
ELIZABETH
Youâve never woken up and realized everything about your life was a complete lie? Lucky you.
(shrugs)
Anyway. Iâve spent, like, a quarter of my life whining about Lucky Spencer. Iâm so over it.
(frowns)
Did you come here to ask me about that?
JASON
No. I guess. A little. I also wanted–I wanted to ask about AJ.
ELIZABETH
(sighs)
Yeah. Sonny probably told you Iâm a good inside source for that.
JASON
He told me you and Courtney were friends.
ELIZABETH
Exactly. And all I know is what I told you earlier–
JASON
But if AJ changes his mind–
ELIZABETH
Will I give you heads up?
She grounds the cigarette on the ground with the heel of her boot.
ELIZABETH (CONTâD)
I donât know. I guess weâll see.
Jason stops her before she goes inside.
JASON
Are you–are you mad at me?
ELIZABETH
Why would I be mad at you?
JASON
You just–you sound mad.
ELIZABETH
Well, hell, Jason. What do you expect? We havenât seen each other since–
(she looks away)
Since that day in the park. I havenât heard from you, and itâs obvious you didnât want to know anything about me since you didnât know about the wedding.
JASON
Did you ask Sonny about me?
ELIZABETH
No. No, I didnât. Because I didnât want to know.
JASON
Then why are you angry at me for not asking?
ELIZABETH
Because Iâm a hypocrite. How is that news to you? I was afraid–
(annoyed with herself)
I was afraid if I asked, heâd tell me you were on the French Riviera with some twit named Bambi and Iâd want to throw myself off the cliff. Which is insane because I was the one that walked away from you.
JASON
Bambi?
ELIZABETH
Shut up.
But theyâre both kind of smiling at one another. The tense mood is gone.
JASON
I didnât want to hear about your wedding. Sonny told me you faked your death because he didnât want me finding out from someone else. And he told me then you were engaged.
ELIZABETH
Iâm sorry–Iâm sorry that I was so stupid last year.
JASON
You werenât–
ELIZABETH
I was. I was an idiotic little girl who didnât know how to stand up for herself. I didnât know how to deal with what going on inside me. Like having feelings for you made me this horrible person–and it doesnât–it didnât, I mean. I wasnât married to Lucky. And I donât know why I let people guilt me into living a life I planned when I was seventeen years old. I mean, itâs just–itâs insane. Lucky died. I didnât. And then I had to go back in time and be that girl. I was stupid, and I hurt you, and Iâm sorry. But Iâm glad I figured it out for myself.
JASON
I am, too. Elizabeth, I was never angry with you–
ELIZABETH
Well, thatâs fine, because I was pissed enough for the both of us.
JASON
Elizabeth–
ELIZABETH
Seriously, though. I donât want to think about it anymore. I lived it. Iâm done with it.
JASON
Okay.
ELIZABETH
Okay.
(a beat)
I really do have to get back to work.
JASON
Okay. Do you–when are you done?
ELIZABETH
I close, so around eleven.
JASON
Did you–did you want to take a ride?
ELIZABETH
Is that even in question?
INT. PORT CHARLES DEPARTMENT – SQUAD ROOM
Scott Baldwin, Marcus Taggart, and Mac Sporpio are gathered around a desk.
SCOTT
Letâs go over it again.
TAGGART
Baldwin–
SCOTT
Again.
MAC
One last time, Taggart. Just to make sure we didnât let anything through the cracks.
Thatâs not why theyâre doing it, and they all know it but Taggart reaches for the file.
TAGGART
Carly leaves Club 101 at one in the morning on Saturday. Itâs her normal hours for the weekend. Thirty minutes later, a witness calls in a report of swerving vehicle.
He picks up another piece of a paper.
TAGGART (CONTâD)
Josh Palmer, 29. Heading to the observatory for work. Heâs calling in the report when the car suddenly careens off the road, crashes through the guard rail and into the lake.
MAC
By the time officers arrive on the scene, the Coast Guard tells us that the currents would have dragged the car three miles in. They start their search there. But it takes almost three hours to start the search.
TAGGART
Palmerâs car is examined. No sign of dents, no signs of an accident. The skid marks on the road lend credence to the report that it was a single car accident.
SCOTT
On a deserted road that barely sees one car all night, much less two at the same time.
MAC
I know, Scott-
SCOTT
And what the hell was she doing there? Carly always came home after work.
TAGGART
Thatâs what her mother tells us. Baldwin, weâve looked at the witness. His car is clean. Thereâs no sign of another car. The license plate he gave us is Carlyâs car. Sheâs been missing since she left the club.
SCOTT
I know, but-
MAC
She had no enemies. She and Sonny divorced last August. Thereâs no connection between them.
TAGGART
And the only person that benefits from Carlyâs death is Jason Morgan. Her estate goes to Michael in trust with Morgan as guardian and executor.
SCOTT
And heâs not going to kill his friend for custody.
TAGGART
No. Much as Iâd like to nail Morgan for something, this isnât an option.
SCOTT
So weâre just going to let it go?
MAC
Weâre going to file it as undetermined. Without a body, without a car, thereâs nothing else we can do. Iâm sorry, Scott.
TAGGART
We may never know why Carly was on the road that night or what caused her to go over that cliff, but knowing isnât going to change anything. Not for Bobbie.
SCOTT
Yeah. Yeah.
He leaves without another word.
MAC
He just doesnât want to tell Bobbie theyâll never know what happened to her daughter. After BJ…
TAGGART
Yeah, I get it. And it sucks for him.
MAC
Letâs just keep the file open for a few more weeks.
(a beat)
It wonât change anything, but itâll give him time to come to terms with it. Itâs the first major case since he took over.
