This entry is part 8 of 13 in the Flash Fiction: Fool Me Twice
Written in 51 minutes đ
Jason and Elizabeth were shown into Drewâs office without another wordâwhich Elizabeth appreciated as she knew the brothers hadnât really come to terms with anything that had transpired over the last four monthsâparticularly the fact that Sam had opted to officially divorce Jason and remarry Drew.
Drew raised his brows with some curiosity when Elizabeth came in, followed by Jason. âHey. Is Jake okay? The boys?â
âTheyâre, ah, fine.â Elizabeth realized her hands were shaking and she turned to Jason. âJason and Iâwe were at my house when weââ
âFranco had the flash drive,â Jason said bluntly. He fished it out of his pocket and set it on Drewâs desk. âI was having Elizabethâs locks changed and one of the guys stepped on box â this was inside.â
Drew stared at it for a long a momentâa minuscule piece of plastic and metal before raising his eyes to his brother. âYouâFrancoââ
âHe came back from the city today,â Elizabeth said. Though she still wore her white winter jacket and the office was heated, she still felt chilled, and she rubbed her arms. âHe put that box down, and he was so angry when he left, I guess he forgot it.â She managed a half smile. âI threw him out.â
âWell, thank God for small miracles,â Drew murmured. He took a deep breath and pressed an intercom button. âSandy, canâcan you tell Sam to come to my office. ItâsâŚan emergency.â
He released the button and reached for the flash drive. âI guess weâre not ready to answer the question of why the hell Franco hasââ Drew closed the drive in his fist and shook his head. âWhyââ
âI donât know. It could be a coincidenceââ Elizabeth closed her mouth. âBut itâs probably not,â she said as both men swung to look at her with some kind of incredulity. âIâm sorry. I have to stop doing that, I know.â
âDrewââ Sam stopped in the open doorway, stared at her ex-husband and her sometimes nemesis. âJason. Elizabeth.â She looked at her husband, shook her head. âAh. Whatâs going onââ
She closed the door and skirted the duo until she joined her husband. âDrewââ
He opened his hand and held it out to her. Sam stared at it, then raised her eyes to his. âThe flash driveââ She looked at Elizabeth. âWhereââ
âFranco,â Elizabeth said with some irritation. âI donât know how or why, but we found it with his things today.â She bit her lip. Looked at Jason. âDo you think heâs realized he left it behind yet?â
âI donât know,â Jason admitted. He looked back to his brother. âI donât know what to do with it. You could probably talk to Maddoxââ
âItâs a flash drive, isnât it?â Drew murmured. He uncapped it, revealing the small USB metal connector. He slid into the laptop that sat on his desk.
Elizabeth, with a regretful glance at Jason, circled the desk and stood on Drewâs other side. After a moment, Jason joined herâbut made sure to stand next to Elizabethâand far away from his ex-wife.
A folder popped up. There were some weird files without a file type Elizabeth recognized. A subfolder labeled Case Notes. Drew moved the mouse, then took a seat to get a better view.
He opened the folder and found several documents. His own nameâAndrew Cain. Jason Morgan.
âWhyââ Elizabeth pressed a fist to her mouth. âJakeâs nameââ
âAnd Francoâs.â Sam traded a glance with Elizabeth. âWhat do you think thatâs about?â
âWell, theyâre pdfs so letâsââ Drew clicked on Francoâs first. âIt looks like a case summaryâsubject presented to lab inâthat canâtââ
âFebruary 2012.â Sam straightened, locked eyes with Jason. âAfter he was supposed to beââ
âI guess that explains where he was for the two years he disappeared and we thought he was dead. Does it sayââ
âHe had memories removed,â Drew murmured. He squinted, trying to scan the small print. âThereâs not a note of whatâbut thereâs anotherâthey brought Betsy Frank in a few months later. She had memories removedâand thenââ Drew shook his head. âShe was given new memories.â
âWhy didnât Andre tell us that you guys werenât the firstââ
âBecause we were a different kind of guinea pig,â Jason muttered. âHe wanted to see how well memory replacement could work, right?â
âProbably. Though thereâs a lotâbut Iâm willing to betââ Drew tapped the screen. âThese memoriesâthis is Franco knowing who we are.â
âIf Franco always knew there was a brotherâmaybe he always knew it was a twin.â Elizabeth frowned, trying to fit the pieces. âMaybe thatâs why he got obssessed with you in the first place, Jason.â
âYeah, because he couldnât find the actual brother he grew up with,â Sam murmured. âIt still doesnât explain why Betsy dumped Drew, butââ She exhaled slowly. âThat doesnât really explain why Franco has thisââ
âThereâs another note here at the end of the file.â Drew looked at Elizabeth with some regret. âHe was released and his study was terminated because of an anomaly that developed in his brain.â
âWhatââ Elizabeth closed her eyes. âThe brain tumor. It was because of the experiments.â
Oh, God.
âWhich means that he did all of thoseââ
Her stomach lurched and she pushed past Jason, rushed out of the room.
ââ
Jason watched her disappear into an adjoining roomâthought about going after her, but Drew sighed.
âSheâs okay. Itâs the bathroomââ Drew printed Francoâs case summary, and then went to the other files in Case Notes and printed the rest. âIâll read mine, you can read yoursâandââ
âIâll read the rest of Francoâs,â Sam said. âElizabeth or Jason should read Jakeâs.â She crossed to the printer to start scooping the papers up but her hand was trembling. âI donât understand any of this. How did Patrick miss this? How did he not know the brain tumor wasnât there all along? How could that they have let himââ
Elizabeth emerged from the bathroom, her face pale, her coat over her arm. âWe can make Andre tell the truth now,â she said faintly. âHe knows the brain tumor wasnât there before they started their experiments. We canâwe can make the courts listen this time.â
âElizabethââ Sam shook her head, looked away. âI think itâs too late for that.â She held out a sheaf of papers. âThis is Jakeâs case summary.â
âItâs probably about the Chimera,â Drew said, as he took his own file from and handed some more paper to Jason. âOr maybe from Andreâs sessionsââ
âIt doesnât look like theâthis calls Jake by name.â Skimming the first few paragraphs, Elizabeth sat down in the chair and looked at Jason who hadnât even glanced at his own file. âAndre says heâs a juvenile subject and he writes about whyâwhy Helena picked him. Why Jake was supposed to kill us all last year.â
Jason leaned over her, trying to read the file behind her. âWhy?â
âThe Chimera was supposed to kill you and me, Drew. And Jake. Because HelenaâHelena didnât know you werenât Jason.â Elizabeth swallowed hard, continued to read. âBecause Andre was supposed to switch the two of you back. After Helena found out she was dying. He was supposed to terminate the experiment.â
âHe failed to mention that,â Drew muttered. âWhy did he let me wander around without any memories for a yearââ
âHelena wanted to pull the plug because it was taking too long for her revenge.â Elizabeth exhaled slowly. âBut Helena died. She sent Jake back to me, thinking that Jason would be there. The Chimera was supposed to be triggered when she died.â
âBut it wasnât for more than a yearââ Drew set his file aside. âI donât understand.â
âMe. It was me she wanted to destroy,â Elizabeth managed to force out. âIt doesnât say whyâbut she took my son to turn him into a weapon and she suggested you and Drew for Andreâs experiments because ofââ Her throat closed. âAnd she wanted our son to kill us. Failing that, Jason, you were supposed to have a trigger thatââ
When she couldnât continue, Jason reached for the papers she was holding. âItâs a letter to Elizabeth,â he told Drew and Sam. âExplaining everything. That device you had in your head that made you help Faison escape?â
âYou have one, too?â Drew said. He managed a wry smile. âIdentical in every way except our faces, I guess. And you were supposed to kill Elizabeth.â
âJesus Christ, that woman was insane. Why would she do all of this after she was gone?â Sam demanded. âWhy wouldnât she want to see her revenge?â
âI bet she was supposed to.â Drew tapped the name of the last file they hadnât printed. âCassandra. That was the woman Anna was hunting, remember? That Valentin Cassadine was involved with.â
âYou donât thinkââ
âYou think Helena Cassadine was trying to figure out to supplant entire memories into a new person for the hell of it? I bet she was supposed to be here to watch it in a younger and healthier body.â
âShe did this because of me.â Elizabeth got to her feet. âAll of this was revenge on me. I donâtâI donât understand.â
âI bet Andre would know.â Sam tapped her husband on the forearm. âAnd we need to figure out if your memories can be recovered.â She bit her lip. âI mean, this sucks, Elizabeth. But none of it happened that way. Andre didnât terminate the experiment. You guys are safe. And Iâll tell you that Helena Cassadine wanting revenge on you and kidnapping Jake and Jason makes a hell of a lot more sense than Victor Cassadine wanting a body guard.â
âAnd it explains Faisonâs involvement,â Jason told Elizabeth. âWe should talk to Maddox.â
âYouâright, but Francoâs out there. And if the brain tumor wasnât holding him backââ Elizabeth swallowed. âI want to take the boys somewhere safe.â
âYeah, Iâm with Elizabeth on this. If you broke up with Franco todayâand he realizes he left this disk drive laying aroundâyou know heâs going to go for your weak spot.â Sam leaned over and ejected the disk from the computer. âDrew and I can track down Maddox.â
âWe can take the boys to Sonnyâs,â Jason told her. âYou know heâd look out for them, and then I can track down Francoââ He hesitated. âTo make sure I know where he is.â
âGood. Good. Letâs do that.â Elizabeth drew on her coat, but somewhere inside of herâshe thought theyâd already missed something crucial.
ââ
The elementary school was their first stop, and Jake and Aiden were pretty excited to be signed out of schoolâuntil Jake saw his father and he immediately scowled.
Elizabeth ignored his protests, signed the boys out, and then they went to the middle school.
âCameron Webber,â she said to the secretary behind the desk who looked frazzled and irritated. âIâm signing him out for a family emergency.â
The woman scowled at her and looked past her, at Jason and the boys who had come in with her. âDonât you people ever talk to each other? I am so tired of you divorced people putting the kids in the middleââ
Elizabethâs heart started to pound. âWhere is my son?â She demanded, leaning forward. âHeâs not supposed to leave with anyone who isnât me or Jason Morgan. And since we are both right hereââ
The woman looked down at the sign out log. Just as she started to snatch it off the desk, Elizabeth slapped her hand down on top of it. Because there was her sonâs name.
And Franco Baldwin had signed her son out an hour ago.
Her vision dimmed as red filled her line of sightâthe rage flared and she reached across the desk and grabbed the woman by her sweater. âWho the hell signed him out?â
âIââ
âWhoa, Mom!â
âElizabethââ
âWho let someone who isnât authorized take my son out of this school?â Elizabeth growled.
âElizabethââ Jason stepped up to her and his face settled into granite lines, his eyes sharpened into flint. âFranco signed Cameron out an hour ago?â
âHeâs not authorized to pick up my boys.â Elizabeth let the woman loose, and she stumbled back ,gasping for air. She snatched the sign out of sheet from the clipboard.
She had to focus on the rage, had to focus on the angerâbecause if she stopped to thinkâ
Oh, God. Her baby was with a monster.
A monster sheâd allowed into their lives.
âMom?â Jake asked, hesitantly. âWhatâsâŚwhatâs wrong?â
âLetâs go,â he said to Elizabeth who seemed frozen to the spot. âLetâs get the boys to Sonnyâs, and weâll figure outââ
âI canâtââ Her chest tightened. âI did this. I did this. Carly warned me. They all warned me. Oh, God. Jasonââ She closed her eyes. âI canât breathe.â
Jason tossed a furious glare at the shell-shocked secretary. âWeâll come back and deal with the school later,â he told her. âLetâsâletâs go figure this out. Weâll call Spinelli, okay?â
âSpinelli. He can track Camâs phone.â Elizabeth let the sign-in sheet paper slide to the floor as she suddenly yanked her phone out of her pocket. âI can do that, too. I can find himââ
But when she tried to locate her sons on the Find Friends appâshe saw that Camâs phone merely said Location Not Available.
âJason?â Jake said, his blue eyes wide, his arm around his frightened brotherâs shoulders. âWhatâs going?â
âLetâs go to Sonnyâs,â Jason said again, and this time Elizabeth followed him, too numb to protest.
